Wise Words for the Older Job Seeker
1. A lot of older workers think: “age discrimination” even before looking for a job! Yes, there is some out there.
2. What to do about this negative message that exists only in the mind? I tell people that it only takes one employer to hire you. Go out and find that one employer. That’s true for anyone else looking for a job.
3. Does the message about the age thing in your head mean that self-esteem is in need of repair? If it does, do something about it. Remember that anyone you talk to about a job is getting older as well.
4. Does your appearance and attitude make potential employers think of you as OLD? (I don’t mean you have to dress, have a hairstyle or act like a teenager) Do the best with what you have. Anyone’s appearance can be improved with a little thought. Don’t buy into any of the stereotypes about being an older worker. You’re not set in your ways, slow to produce, hard to teach, ARE YOU?
5. If you have to work a little harder to find an employer that needs and wants you, so what! Ask for a job/s.
That’s a new touch.
6. Keep on keeping on! If you are the proverbial turtle while the hares are racing on ahead, just remember who got where first. Your next employer is out there somewhere. Prove to yourself and others that you can win the job race. It’s not always the young who get the plum jobs, wisdom wins at the finish line.
